Q: What’s your design philosophy?
Listening to a client is paramount to all good design. The emotions that are invoked by certain fabrics, products reviewed, (curved, linier, etc.) are very much part of a clients personality. It’s important that the space in which I am commissioned to work with creates an environment that reflects function as well as the feeling of “coming home” to the individuals using the space, which I believe is a reflection of their inner souls. This encompasses a myriad of design principles from high-tech minimalist to soft line traditional.
Q: What’s the best piece of design advice you have received?
I think my clients appreciate my advice in terms of time spent cleaning certain elements of the space I’m working with. If they come home from work and must work again to keep a particular design element looking good it becomes a chore. Interviewing the client with regard to children, animals, hard or soft water for example can be a huge factor in whether the choice made is low maintenance for them.
Q: Where do you get your inspiration?
For me, inspiration always begins with the client and expands from there. I’m always looking at form and linear details in everything from a piece of pottery to fabric mixing on textiles and clothing. It’s exciting to see how different design principles come together in everything from tableware to a pair of well-designed shoes! I also draw inspiration from nature and the entire outdoor environment. Everything in nature has movement and color that provokes emotion.
Q: Talk about a recent project you’re proud of.
I was commissioned for a small project by a newlywed couple on a remodel for an existing townhome purchase. It encompassed paint selection, carpet and window treatments throughout, as well as some furniture placement. After listening to their lifestyle and work habits closely, I was able to move them in a direction that would minimize friction over their choices. Both husband and wife were ecstatic with their finished project and appreciated my listening to both of them when guiding them to product choices.
Whether the project is large or small, knowing ‘I got it’ from the client’s standpoint is what makes my job so incredibly rewarding!
Q: What do you think about the Danze product line?
While I haven’t had the opportunity to specify Danze (yet!), I’ve shown the Reef bathroom faucet and collection. It’s one of my favorites for those seeking a contemporary design.
